Madden NFL 2012 shipped in summer 2011 for the 2011 NFL season. Launch ratings are set before the season is played, so they reflect the previous year’s performance - a player’s breakout shows up in the next year’s game.

Madden NFL 12 released August 30, 2011 with Browns running back Peyton Hillis on the cover, the winner of a fan-voted bracket. Antonio Gates, Darrelle Revis, Tom Brady, and Troy Polamalu were the launch 99s.

The Giants beat New England 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI, Eli Manning named game MVP. Aaron Rodgers won regular-season MVP with 45 touchdown passes, Drew Brees took Offensive Player of the Year and broke Dan Marino's passing-yards record with 5,476, Terrell Suggs won Defensive Player of the Year, and Cam Newton and Von Miller won the rookie awards.

Hillis became the face of the so-called Madden curse: a 1,177-yard back the year before, he fell to 587 yards amid injury and a contract standoff. Cam Newton was the flip side, a rookie who threw for 4,051 yards and ran for 14 scores.
