David Garrard was born on February 14, 1978, in East Orange, New Jersey, and played college football at East Carolina. The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him in the fourth round of the 2002 draft, 108th overall, and Madden NFL 03 listed him at 59 for that season. He was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in January 2004 and had about 12 inches of intestine removed that June, then was healthy for the season opener. Madden NFL 06 put him at 79 for 2005.
Jack Del Rio named Garrard the starter on August 31, 2007, and Jacksonville released Byron Leftwich the next day. He started 12 games that season, throwing 18 touchdown passes against three interceptions for a 102.2 rating. On January 5, 2008, trailing Pittsburgh 29-28 late, he ran 32 yards on fourth-and-two to set up the winning kick in a 31-29 wild-card victory, the franchise's first playoff win since 1999.
He started all 16 games in 2008 and 2009, and Madden NFL 09 carried his career-high 92 overall for the 2008 season. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for 2009 and threw 23 touchdown passes in 2010, a season Madden NFL 11 graded at 79. Jacksonville drafted Blaine Gabbert and released Garrard on September 6, 2011. Knee surgery cost him the 2012 season in Miami, and he signed with Jacksonville on May 8, 2015, to retire as a Jaguar with 16,003 passing yards and 89 touchdown passes.
