Madden NFL 2019 shipped in summer 2018 for the 2018 NFL season. Launch ratings are set before the season is played, so they reflect the previous year’s performance - a player’s breakout shows up in the next year’s game.

Madden NFL 19 launched August 10, 2018 with Antonio Brown on the cover. EA stacked the 99 tier: Aaron Donald, Aaron Rodgers, Brown, Luke Kuechly, Rob Gronkowski, Tom Brady, and Von Miller.

New England won Super Bowl LIII in a 13-3 grind over the Rams, Julian Edelman named game MVP. Patrick Mahomes won regular-season MVP and Offensive Player of the Year with 50 touchdown passes. Aaron Donald repeated as Defensive Player of the Year with 20.5 sacks, and Saquon Barkley and Darius Leonard took the rookie awards.

Mahomes is the launch story: a backup-turned-starter EA could only project, he threw for 5,097 yards and 50 scores in his first year under center. The miss was Rob Gronkowski, a 99 tight end whose body finally betrayed him at 47 catches for 682 yards before he retired that offseason.
