Billy Volek: Undrafted Fresno State QB, Titans and Chargers
Billy Volek was born on April 28, 1976, in Hemet, California, and played college football at Fresno State, where he led the Bulldogs to a Western Athletic Conference title in 1999 and finished with 6,385 passing yards and 57 touchdowns. No team selected him in the 2000 NFL draft, and he signed with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent. Madden NFL 02 listed him at 46 for the 2001 season.
Volek started one game in 2003 and eight in 2004, and Tennessee named him the starter for the rest of the 2004 season on December 17 after Steve McNair was injured. He passed for 492 yards against Oakland and 426 against Kansas City in consecutive December games, joining Dan Marino, Dan Fouts and Phil Simms as the only quarterbacks to exceed 400 yards in back-to-back games. Madden NFL 05 listed him at 77 for 2004. McNair returned in 2005 and Volek started once, a season Madden NFL 06 listed at 84.
Tennessee traded him to San Diego on September 19, 2006, for a conditional sixth-round pick. Backing up Philip Rivers, he replaced the injured starter in the divisional round at Indianapolis on January 13, 2008, and scored on a one-yard sneak in a 28-24 win that sent San Diego to the AFC Championship Game. Madden NFL 10 listed him at 67 for 2009. San Diego released him in March 2012, and he announced his retirement that May. He finished with 3,754 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
