Colin Kaepernick was born on November 3, 1987 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was adopted at five weeks old, and grew up in Turlock, California. He played college football at Nevada and twice won Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. San Francisco drafted him in the second round, 36th overall, in 2011, and Madden NFL 12 listed him at 70 for that season.

He replaced a concussed Alex Smith in Week 10 of 2012 and started the rest of the year. On January 12, 2013 he ran for 181 yards against Green Bay in his first playoff start, breaking Michael Vick's single-game rushing record for a quarterback. San Francisco went on to lose Super Bowl XLVII to Baltimore 34-31. Madden NFL 25 rated him 89 for 2013, when he threw for 3,197 yards.

He lost the starting job to Blaine Gabbert in November 2015 and had shoulder surgery, and Madden NFL 17 listed him at 74 for 2016. During the 2016 preseason he sat, and then knelt, during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial injustice. He opted out of his contract on March 3, 2017 and was not signed by another team. He filed a collusion grievance against the NFL in 2017 and withdrew it in February 2019 after reaching a confidential settlement. He threw for 12,271 yards and 72 touchdowns and rushed for 2,300 yards in six NFL seasons.
