David Carr: No. 1 pick in 2002, the Texans' first draft choice
David Carr was born July 21, 1979 in Bakersfield, California, played college football at Fresno State and won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award in 2001. The expansion Houston Texans took him first overall in the 2002 draft, making him the franchise's first draft selection. He started all 16 games as a rookie and was sacked 76 times, an NFL single-season record. Madden NFL 03 listed him at 76 overall for that 2002 season.
Carr threw for a career-high 3,531 yards with 16 touchdowns in 2004. Madden NFL 06 rated him 87 overall for the 2005 season, the highest mark of his career, in a year Houston finished 2-14. He completed 68.3 percent of his passes in 2006 and led the league in completion percentage, then was released in March 2007 after the Texans traded for Matt Schaub. He had been sacked 249 times in five seasons in Houston.
Carr started four games for Carolina in 2007, then backed up Eli Manning in New York and Alex Smith in San Francisco. Madden NFL 10 carried him at 60 overall for 2009. He was on the Giants roster that beat New England 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI, without taking a regular-season snap that year. Carr finished with 14,452 passing yards, 65 touchdowns and 71 interceptions in 94 games, and became offensive coordinator at Bakersfield Christian High School in 2015.
