A fourth-round QB who won his one real start

Stephen McGee was a fourth-round pick out of Texas A&M in 2009, the first quarterback Dallas had drafted in nearly a decade, and he spent his brief career as the third arm behind Tony Romo and Jon Kitna. He was a developmental prospect on a team that did not need him to play, a young quarterback who dresses and watches.

The Madden card is a backup's line. He opened at a 59 and peaked at a 67 in Madden NFL 12, the modest grade of a quarterback the game barely bothered to rate, a fair read on a player with almost no NFL film. His whole career amounted to three games and one start, but that start was a win, a 14-13 upset of Philadelphia in 2010 sealed by a late touchdown to Jason Witten.

He drifted out of the league after a brief Houston stint and a run in the CFL, the developmental arm that never developed into a starter. McGee is the archetype of the mid-round quarterback who exists as insurance, valuable mostly for the reps he takes off the starter in practice. His modest card, peaking at a 67, is the honest read on a quarterback whose NFL career was three games and one nice memory.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
