New England threw three interceptions in Seattle and lost A.J. Brown, and our model trimmed the Patriots to 8-9

Updated

Drake Maye went 23 of 33 for 178 yards in Seattle, threw three interceptions, and lost 13-10 to a team playing its backup quarterback for three and a half quarters. That is a rough opening night for the quarterback we spent the summer calling the reason to lean in. A.J. Brown, the alpha receiver who was supposed to change everything about this passing game, hobbled off with an ankle injury and has since been placed on injured reserve. When we re-ran the season with the loss and the absence seeded in, New England slid from nine wins to eight, an 8-9 finish with a 40 percent playoff chance. The defense is still the reason to believe. The offense just lost its best new piece and its quarterback had his worst night in a year.

Take the offense first, because it is where the projection moved. Maye's line now reads 3,913 yards and 22 touchdowns against 16 interceptions behind a passer rating near 91, essentially the summer yardage with five more picks attached. That is the model absorbing one bad night without deciding he is a bad quarterback, and it is the right read. Maye had a full-blown breakout a year ago and one game in a rainstorm of interceptions does not undo it. What it does is remove the margin for error, because the target he was supposed to lean on is gone.

Brown's absence reshapes the receiving corps. Romeo Doubs steps into the number one role and our model projects him for 78 catches and 1,117 yards, up from 51 and 722 in July. Demario Douglas emerges at 55 catches, Mack Hollins at 48. Hunter Henry holds at 50 catches and five scores from the tight end spot. Rhamondre Stevenson carries the ground game at 943 yards and TreVeyon Henderson adds 461 with five scores. It is a functional group, and functional is a long way from the balanced, layered unit we described in the summer. The offense projects for 363 points, 17th in the league, right in the middle, and the middle is not enough in a division where two rivals have Josh Allen and a top-six defense respectively.

The defense is doing exactly what the grades said it would, and it is why eight wins is a floor rather than a slide. Our model projects New England allowing 350 points, 13th in the league, and generating nearly 49 sacks, eighth in football, with 12 interceptions. Dre'Mont Jones got to Drew Lock in Seattle and projects for 13 sacks on the season. Cory Durden projects for ten and a half from the interior. Craig Woodson holds at four interceptions and 123 tackles. This group held a playoff-caliber offense to 13 points on the road and gave its own offense every chance to win. The offense did not take it.

That is the honest tension. New England built this defense through retention while its rivals gambled, and the continuity edge we described in July is real. But a defense that keeps every game close only pays off if the offense can win the close ones, and on opening night the offense turned it over three times in a game decided by three points. When we ran the rest of the season, the Patriots lost more of those coin flips than they won, and that is the difference between nine wins and eight.

The division is bunched in a way it has not been in years, and New England is in the middle of the bunch rather than at the top of it. Buffalo won a shootout in Houston and climbed to 8-9. The Jets beat Tennessee on the back of a top-six defense and hold at 9-8. Miami slid to six. When we ran the rest of the season, the AFC East came down to three teams within a win of each other, and the Patriots won it in a real share of simulated years without being the favorite in any of them.

The market opened New England around nine wins, and in July our model sat right on it. Now we sit a win under, and the lean is modest and explained entirely by one injury and one bad night. If Brown is back by midseason and Maye's interceptions were an outlier rather than a trend, this is the nine-win team we previewed. If the passing game stays thin and the turnovers keep coming, eight is generous and the defense is being wasted.

The path to more runs through Maye. If the quarterback who threw for 5,000 yards of production last season shows up from Week 2 on, Doubs and Douglas are enough to keep the offense competent and the defense does the rest. The path to less runs through the offensive line and the turnovers, as it did in the summer. Both are live. The model leans slightly toward the second after one week, which is what 8-9 means.

The next month is a hard one for a thin offense. Pittsburgh comes to New England in Week 2 with a defense our model grades fifth and a pass rush that just returned an interception for a touchdown. Then the Patriots go to Jacksonville and Buffalo in consecutive weeks before hosting Las Vegas in Week 5. When we ran that stretch, New England was close to a coin flip against Pittsburgh, a slight favorite in Buffalo and against the Raiders, and a heavy underdog in Jacksonville, which is a 2-2 month and a record around 2-3 entering October. That is the stretch in which the offense without Brown has to prove it can score enough to let the defense win, and the Pittsburgh game, with Maye coming off three interceptions and facing T.J. Watt, is the first exam.

So the read is a team whose defense arrived on schedule and whose offense took a step back before it could take one forward. The rebuild is still real. The quarterback is still the reason to believe in it. After one week, the projection says the payoff waits a little longer than we thought.
