Tony Romo was born on April 21, 1980 in San Diego and grew up in Burlington, Wisconsin. He won the Walter Payton Award at Eastern Illinois in 2002, went undrafted in 2003 and signed with the Dallas Cowboys. He spent three seasons as a backup and the holder on placekicks, and Madden NFL 05 rated him 65.

Romo took the starting job in the middle of the 2006 season and made the Pro Bowl. His fumbled hold on a short field goal ended the wild-card game at Seattle in January 2007. He started all 16 games in 2007 and made the Pro Bowl again, and Madden NFL 09 rated him 94 after the 2008 season. In 2014 he led the NFL with a 113.2 passer rating and threw 34 touchdown passes, and Madden NFL 15 rated him 91 that year.

He had back surgery for a herniated disc in December 2013, then broke his left collarbone twice in 2015 and played four games, a season for which Madden NFL 16 rated him 93. He suffered a compression fracture of his L1 vertebra on the third play of a 2016 preseason game against Seattle. Dak Prescott took over, and Romo appeared in one game that season. Dallas released him in March 2017 and he joined CBS as its lead NFL game analyst. He finished with 34,183 passing yards, 248 touchdowns and a 2-4 playoff record.
