The 2026 season by the numbers: our model makes the Los Angeles Rams a runaway Super Bowl favorite

A team-by-team read on who our model loves, who it fades, and how the season simulation works

Every projection here comes from a simulation that plays the 2026 season 100 times over. It starts with what each player actually did in 2025, graded on a per-snap basis, ages every one along a career curve, drops them onto their 2026 rosters, and hands the league its real schedule. No win totals go in, no hype, no reputations. The model prices the roster on the field, which is exactly why some of its answers argue with the betting market.

We trust it because we have run the same engine on the previous five seasons, tuning it until the simulated results matched what really happened before ever pointing it at a year we do not yet know. Games resolve from matchups, receivers against real coverage and pass rush against protection, not a dice roll weighted by team name. When you read that our model has a team at eleven wins, that number survived five years of testing against reality first.

At the top, and it is not remotely close, sits Los Angeles. The Rams did not just grade out as the best team in football. They grade first in the league on offense and first on defense at the same time, which almost never happens. Matthew Stafford is projected for a monster line, 5,045 yards and 39 touchdowns from a clean pocket. Puka Nacua is set to lead the NFL in receiving at 124 catches for over 1,600 yards, and Davante Adams lines up across from him to pull the other cornerback while posting 90 grabs, 1,300 yards, and 10 scores of his own. Then the front office went out and landed Myles Garrett, a double-digit-sack wrecker off the edge, and the defense jumped to first in the league right alongside the offense. When we ran the simulations, Los Angeles pushed toward fifteen wins and blew through its schedule, a runaway Super Bowl favorite with no weak link to attack anywhere on the depth chart. Everybody else in the NFL is playing for second.

Detroit is right behind as the most complete roster in the NFC, and Cincinnati rode the most dangerous passing game in football into the top tier despite a shaky defense. Denver, Seattle, Philadelphia, and Houston round out the contenders, the Texans carried by a wrecking-crew pass rush our model believes can win a division.

The middle of the league is thick. Indianapolis piled up enough wins to be the one result we would double-check. Dallas can outscore its defensive problems, Green Bay added a superstar rusher to a loaded offense, and a healthy Trevor Lawrence has Jacksonville climbing. A little lower, the model finally stepped off the Kansas City bandwagon, no longer a top-tier team with its defense leaking.

Then come the arguments. Our boldest call is Buffalo, where an elite Josh Allen offense could not save a defense that lost most of its best players in one offseason, and the Bills landed well under the market. Atlanta swings the other way, a bet that Michael Penix Jr. drags a young team to eleven wins. Tampa Bay projects for a collapse built on Baker Mayfield's touchdown rate coming back to earth. And San Francisco keeps its star names but a defense that grades near the bottom of the league, so the model fades the 49ers hard. We flagged the biggest gaps so you know where the disagreement lives.

At the bottom sit teams building for later. Tennessee handed the keys to a rookie and braced for the growing pains. The Giants, Cardinals, and Browns have talent in spots but holes too big to paper over, and Washington's defense grades as a problem the roster cannot outscore.

That is the whole philosophy. The model does not care who won last year. It cares about the talent on the field, the ages of the players carrying it, and the schedule ahead. Some of what follows will confirm what you believe about your team, and some of it will make you want to throw your phone across the room.
