Madden NFL 99 released in 1998 with John Madden on the cover and introduced Franchise Mode, the multi-season roster-and-draft feature that became the heart of the series and is still its signature mode a quarter century later.

Denver repeated as champion, winning Super Bowl XXXIII 34-19 over Atlanta in John Elway's final game, the 38-year-old Elway named game MVP. Terrell Davis won regular-season MVP after rushing for 2,008 yards, Reggie White won Defensive Player of the Year with 16 sacks at age 37, and Randy Moss won Offensive Rookie of the Year with 17 touchdown catches and 1,313 yards for a 15-1 Vikings team.

Minnesota set a then-record for points and looked unbeatable until Gary Anderson, perfect all season, missed a field goal in the NFC Championship. Davis' 2,008-yard MVP run and Moss' instant stardom were the season's signature ratings, and Elway walked away a champion on the database's highest tier.
