Pittsburgh bet the season on a 41 year old arm, and our model says the bet pays off

Updated

The Steelers made the boldest bet of any team this offseason, handing the keys to a 41 year old Aaron Rodgers and betting that one more year of elite quarterbacking is left in the tank. It is the kind of gamble that either ages beautifully or blows up in the first month. When we ran the simulations, it aged beautifully. Pittsburgh landed at nearly nine wins, right on top of the market, and the projection is built on the simplest premise in football, that a competent quarterback surrounded by talent and fronted by a nasty defense is a formula that just keeps working.

Rodgers is the swing, and the projection is kind to him. Our model hands back a line of 4,141 yards and 20 touchdowns, a clear step up on his actual 2025 production of roughly 3,468 yards, the kind of season that says the arm still plays even if the legs are long gone. He does not need to be the MVP version of himself. He needs to distribute the ball, avoid the killer mistake, and let the surrounding talent do the heavy lifting, and that is a job a quarterback of his intelligence can still do at a high level in his forties.

The surrounding talent is real. D.K. Metcalf is a genuine number one, a projected 76 catches for better than 900 yards and the kind of size and speed that wins the jump balls Rodgers loves to throw. Pat Freiermuth is one of the more reliable tight ends in the league and a red zone weapon, five scores in our run of the season. The rookie receiver Germie Bernard flashed for 65 grabs and 700 yards, a promising complementary piece. And the ground game is a genuine committee strength, with Jaylen Warren and the imported Rico Dowdle both coming off 1,000 yard campaigns, a two headed backfield that keeps the offense on schedule and takes pressure off the veteran quarterback.

The backbone, as always in Pittsburgh, is the defense, and it remains the identity of this team. When we ran the simulations the Steelers piled up nearly 49 sacks, one of the highest totals in the league, led by an edge rush that opposing tackles still dread. T.J. Watt is a wrecking ball, Alex Highsmith bends the edge on the other side, and Cameron Heyward anchors the interior. Our defense grade lands 16th, which undersells the pass rush, and a front that gets after the passer this relentlessly turns close games into wins by generating the takeaway or the third down stop that flips a possession.

There was some turnover in the secondary, and it is worth noting honestly. Pittsburgh lost corner Darius Slay and a couple of safeties, and the back end will lean on the pass rush to bail it out more than a coordinator would like. When the front gets home, the coverage does not have to hold long. When it does not, there will be plays surrendered. That tension is baked into a 16th ranked defense, good but not airtight, carried by the men up front.

The math of this team is the math of the whole AFC North. It is a physical, defense first division where games are won in the trenches and decided by a possession, and Pittsburgh is built precisely for that kind of football. When we ran the season, the Steelers won the low scoring, grind it out games that this division specializes in, because they have the pass rush to steal a possession and a quarterback smart enough not to give one back. That is a repeatable identity, not a fluke.

Our projection and the market agree here, which is a comfortable place to be. Vegas sees a team hovering around eight wins, a solid but unspectacular contender, and our model nods along. When both the grades and the betting line point to the same number, the honest thing is to take it and trust it. Pittsburgh is a playoff caliber team with a real ceiling if the quarterback holds up and the pass rush stays healthy.

The path to being wrong is stitched into the quarterback's birth certificate. Rodgers is 41, and 41 year old quarterbacks are one bad hit away from a lost season and a backup who cannot approach their production. If he misses time, the offense falls off a cliff, and a defense this good would be left grinding out games in the teens. That is the risk that keeps this from being a slam dunk, and it is a real one.

But you play the season in front of you, and the season in front of Pittsburgh is a proven quarterback, a strong receiver room, a bruising committee backfield, and a pass rush that terrifies people. When we ran the simulations, that combination won nine games without needing much luck. We will take the number, respect the age related risk, and call the Steelers what they are, a hard nosed, dangerous team that nobody in the division wants to see in January. The bet on Rodgers looks like a smart one.

Everything about this team is built for the margins, and the margins are where the Steelers have always lived. A takeaway here, a red zone stop there, a veteran quarterback managing the clock in a one score fourth quarter. When we ran the season, those margins fell Pittsburgh's way more often than not, and that is not an accident of the simulation. It is the design of the roster, and it is why our model sees a winning team.
