Matt Cassel: USC Backup, 230th Pick, 2008 Patriots Starter
Matt Cassel was born on May 17, 1982, in Los Angeles. He never started a game at quarterback at USC, where he sat behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, and New England drafted him in the seventh round with the 230th pick in 2005. He appeared in 14 games over three seasons as a backup, and Madden NFL 08 listed him at 75 overall for the 2007 season.
Tom Brady tore his ACL in the 2008 season opener, and Cassel started the following 15 games. He threw for 400 yards against the New York Jets in Week 11 and 415 against Miami in Week 12, becoming the first Patriots quarterback with consecutive 400-yard games. New England finished 11-5 and missed the playoffs. New England traded him to Kansas City in February 2009, and Madden NFL 10 rated him 83 overall for that 2009 season.
Cassel led the Chiefs to the AFC West title in 2010 and was named a Pro Bowl alternate in place of an injured Brady, and Baltimore beat Kansas City 30-7 in the wild-card round. Madden NFL 12 rated him 86 overall for the 2011 season, which a hand injury ended after nine games. He later appeared for Minnesota, Buffalo, Dallas, Tennessee and Detroit, and his last season came with the Lions in 2018. He finished with 17,508 passing yards, 104 touchdowns and 82 interceptions across 14 seasons.
