Derek Anderson: sixth-round pick, 2007 Pro Bowl with Cleveland
Derek Anderson was born June 15, 1983 in Scappoose, Oregon, and played college football at Oregon State, where he set a school record with 4,058 passing yards in 2003. The Baltimore Ravens drafted him in the sixth round, 213th overall, in 2005, waived him that September, and Cleveland claimed him off waivers the next day. He never appeared in a regular-season game for Baltimore. Madden NFL 07 listed him at 66 overall for the 2006 season, when he played five games.
Anderson replaced Charlie Frye in the 2007 opener, then threw for 328 yards and five touchdowns against Cincinnati in a 51-45 win in his first start on September 16. He finished the season with 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns, went 10-5 as a starter, and replaced the injured Tom Brady in the Pro Bowl. The PFWA named him Most Improved Player. Madden NFL 09 rated him 87 overall for 2008, his highest figure.
A knee injury ended his 2008 season and he lost the job to Brady Quinn. Anderson started nine games for Arizona in 2010, then spent seven seasons backing up Cam Newton in Carolina, a run that included Super Bowl 50. Madden NFL 17 carried him at 70 overall for the 2016 season. He started two games for Buffalo in 2018 and retired in May 2019 with 10,878 passing yards and 60 touchdown passes.
