John Madden Football '92 released in 1991 with John Madden on the cover, an early Genesis and SNES entry whose improved animation and instant replay helped the series pull away from its competitors and grow into the standard for football games.
Washington won Super Bowl XXVI, 37-24 over Buffalo, quarterback Mark Rypien named game MVP. Thurman Thomas won regular-season MVP, Warren Moon led the league with 4,690 passing yards, Emmitt Smith won the first of his rushing titles with 1,563 yards, Michael Irvin led with 1,523 receiving yards, and Pat Swilling won Defensive Player of the Year with 17 sacks.
Washington's 14-2 team was one of the most complete of the era, rolling through the playoffs behind Rypien and a dominant line. Thomas and Barry Sanders headlined a golden age of running backs that sat atop the ratings, while Buffalo's K-Gun offense lost its second straight Super Bowl.
