Madden NFL 2020 shipped in summer 2019 for the 2019 NFL season. Launch ratings are set before the season is played, so they reflect the previous year’s performance - a player’s breakout shows up in the next year’s game.

Madden NFL 20 released August 2, 2019 with Patrick Mahomes on the cover off his MVP breakout. The launch 99 club was Aaron Donald, Bobby Wagner, DeAndre Hopkins, and Khalil Mack, with Mahomes himself at 97.

Kansas City won Super Bowl LIV, 31-20 over San Francisco, Mahomes taking game MVP. Lamar Jackson was a unanimous regular-season MVP. Michael Thomas won Offensive Player of the Year and set the single-season catch record with 149 grabs for 1,725 yards. Stephon Gilmore won Defensive Player of the Year, Kyler Murray and Nick Bosa the rookie awards. Derrick Henry led the league with 1,540 rushing yards.

Antonio Brown, a 98 at launch, never made it work: a bizarre offseason cost him a spot in Oakland and he played one game before New England released him. Lamar Jackson was the opposite, a high-80s passer in August who rushed for 1,206 yards and won MVP unanimously.
