Matthew Stafford was born on February 7, 1988 in Tampa, Florida, played high school football at Highland Park in Dallas and college football at Georgia, and was drafted first overall by the Detroit Lions in 2009. In 2011 he threw for 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns, took Detroit to its first playoff berth since 1999 and won AP Comeback Player of the Year. Madden NFL 13 rated his 2012 season at 91, his highest mark in the series.

He started every Detroit game from 2011 through 2018. A back injury ended his 2019 season after eight games, and Madden NFL 20 listed that year at 79. Detroit traded him to the Los Angeles Rams in March 2021, and in his first season there he beat Cincinnati 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI, throwing a late touchdown to Cooper Kupp. Madden NFL 22 had him at 83 for that season.

Madden NFL 24 marked his 2023 season at 75. In 2025 he led the NFL with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdown passes, won AP Most Valuable Player, was named first-team All-Pro for the first time and made his third Pro Bowl; the Rams lost the NFC Championship Game 31-27 to Seattle. Through the 2025 season he had thrown for 64,516 yards and 423 touchdowns, sixth on the career passing yardage list.
