Philip Rivers was born on December 8, 1981 in Decatur, Alabama, and played college football at NC State. The New York Giants drafted him fourth overall in 2004 and traded him to San Diego for Eli Manning on draft day. He appeared in four games across two seasons behind Drew Brees, and Madden NFL 05 listed him at 79 for 2004. Rivers took over as the starter in 2006 and began a run of 240 consecutive regular-season starts, second only to Brett Favre's 297.
On January 20, 2008 he started the AFC Championship Game against New England on a torn ACL. In 2010 he led the NFL with 4,710 passing yards. Madden NFL 12 listed him at 96 for the 2011 season, the highest figure of his career. He was selected to eight Pro Bowls. Madden NFL 18 listed him at 84 for the 2017 season, and Madden NFL 20 listed him at 94 for 2019, his last year with the Chargers.
Rivers spent 2020 with Indianapolis, announced his retirement on January 20, 2021, and became head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama. He returned to the Colts in December 2025 at 44, signing to the active roster on December 13 and starting against Seattle the next day. He started three games and Indianapolis lost all three. He finished with 63,984 passing yards.
