Madden NFL 2017 shipped in summer 2016 for the 2016 NFL season. Launch ratings are set before the season is played, so they reflect the previous year’s performance - a player’s breakout shows up in the next year’s game.

Madden NFL 17 launched August 23, 2016 with Rob Gronkowski on the cover. The 99 club: J.J. Watt, Luke Kuechly, Gronkowski, and Von Miller.

New England won Super Bowl LI in overtime, 34-28 over Atlanta after trailing 28-3, Tom Brady taking game MVP. Matt Ryan won regular-season MVP and Offensive Player of the Year, Khalil Mack Defensive Player of the Year, and Dak Prescott and Joey Bosa the rookie awards. Ezekiel Elliott led the league with 1,631 rushing yards.

Two of EA's four 99s were wrecked by injury: J.J. Watt played three games before back surgery and Gronkowski just eight. The opposite was Dak Prescott, a fourth-round rookie EA rated as a backup who started all 16 games and went 13-3.
