William Layton Roaf was born on April 18, 1970 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the son of a dentist and of Andree Layton Roaf, the first Black woman to serve on the Arkansas Supreme Court. He was a consensus All-American and an Outland Trophy finalist at Louisiana Tech. New Orleans took him eighth overall in 1993, and he started all 16 games at right tackle as a rookie.

He moved to left tackle in 1994 and was a first-team All-Pro that season and again in 1995. Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 96 for 1994, and Madden NFL 97 rated him 63 for the 1996 season. Roaf made seven Pro Bowls in nine seasons with the Saints and was named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team. Madden NFL 2001 rated him 93 for 2000.

A knee injury held him to seven games in 2001, and New Orleans traded him to Kansas City in March 2002. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in each of his four seasons with the Chiefs. Madden NFL 05 rated him 95 for 2004, the second of back-to-back first-team All-Pro years. He told the Kansas City Star on July 28, 2006 that he was retiring, having started all 189 games he played. Roaf was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.
