Shannon Sharpe was born on June 26, 1968 in Chicago and was raised by his grandmother in Glennville, Georgia. He played college football at Savannah State, and the Denver Broncos drafted him in the seventh round, 192nd overall, in 1990. He started two games as a rookie. Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 96 for the 1994 season.

Sharpe was a first-team All-Pro in 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998, and he made seven straight Pro Bowls from 1992 through 1998. Denver won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII after the 1997 and 1998 seasons, and Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 98 for 1998. A broken collarbone limited him to five games in 1999, and he signed with Baltimore for 2000, a season for which Madden NFL 2001 rated him 91.

On January 14, 2001 he caught a short pass from Trent Dilfer in the AFC Championship Game at Oakland and ran 96 yards for a touchdown, the longest reception in NFL playoff history. Baltimore won Super Bowl XXXV two weeks later. He returned to Denver for 2002, a year for which Madden NFL 03 rated him 92. He retired after 2003 with 815 receptions, 10,060 receiving yards and 62 touchdowns, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
