Neil Smith: 104.5 Sacks for Kansas City, Denver and San Diego
Neil Smith was born on April 10, 1966, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and graduated from McDonogh 35 High School in the city. He played college football at Nebraska and was named an All-American in 1987. The Kansas City Chiefs traded up one slot to take him second overall in the 1988 NFL draft, and he became their starting left defensive end.
Smith recorded 14.5 sacks in 1992, a season Madden NFL 93 graded at a calculated 69. He led the NFL with 15 sacks in 1993 and was named first-team All-Pro by the Associated Press. Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 96 for 1994, when he co-led the league in forced fumbles. He was voted to the Pro Bowl five straight years from 1991 through 1995 and again in 1997, and was selected to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team.
He signed with the Denver Broncos in 1997 and won Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII. In the divisional playoff against Miami on January 9, 1999, he returned a fumble 79 yards for a touchdown; Madden NFL 99 rated that 1998 season a calculated 95. He played his final year with the San Diego Chargers in 2000, which Madden NFL 2001 rated 87. Smith finished with 104.5 sacks, 625 tackles and 30 forced fumbles, and was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Honor in 2006.
