Ray Lewis was born on May 15, 1975 in Bartow, Florida, played at Miami, and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round, 26th overall, in 1996, the franchise's first draft class. He started 13 of the 14 games he played as a rookie, and Madden NFL 97 rated him 29 for that season.

On January 31, 2000, Lewis was charged in connection with the deaths of two men in Atlanta; the murder charges were dropped, and he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and testified for the prosecution. That season he was named Defensive Player of the Year, anchored a defense that allowed 165 points in 16 games, and was named MVP of Super Bowl XXXV. Madden NFL 2001 rated him 96 for 2000, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 99 for 2003, the second of his two Defensive Player of the Year seasons.

He spent all 17 of his seasons in Baltimore and was selected to 13 Pro Bowls; Madden NFL 10 rated him 97 for the 2009 season. He played his last game on February 3, 2013, a 34-31 win over San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII. He finished with 2,059 combined tackles, 41.5 sacks and 31 interceptions, and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
