John Elway was born on June 28, 1960 in Port Angeles, Washington, played at Stanford, and was taken first overall by the Baltimore Colts in the 1983 draft before a trade sent him to Denver. He drove the Broncos 98 yards to a tying touchdown in the AFC Championship Game at Cleveland on January 11, 1987, and Denver won 23-20 in overtime. He was named AP Most Valuable Player for the 1987 season.

Denver lost Super Bowls XXI, XXII and XXIV by a combined 136-40. Madden NFL 93 put him at a calculated 79 for the 1992 season, and Madden NFL 95 raised him to a calculated 95 for the 1994 season. The Associated Press named him second-team All-Pro in 1987, 1993 and 1996, and he was selected to nine Pro Bowls.

Madden NFL 97 listed him at 84 for the 1996 season. Denver beat Green Bay 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII on January 25, 1998, and Madden NFL 98 rated him a calculated 92 for the 1997 season. He threw for 336 yards in a 34-19 win over Atlanta in Super Bowl XXXIII on January 31, 1999 and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. He retired on May 2, 1999 with 51,475 passing yards and 300 touchdown passes, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
