Bruce Smith was born on June 18, 1963 in Norfolk, Virginia, won the Outland Trophy at Virginia Tech in 1984, and was taken first overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 1985 NFL Draft. He played 15 seasons in Buffalo. He appeared in only five games in 1991, and Madden NFL 92 produced a calculated 92 for that season.

The Associated Press named Smith its Defensive Player of the Year in 1990 and again in 1996, and he was selected to 11 Pro Bowls. He recorded a safety against the Giants in Super Bowl XXV, the first of four consecutive Super Bowls Buffalo lost. Madden NFL 97 rated his 1996 season an 89, and Madden NFL 99 produced a calculated 98 for the 1998 season.

Smith signed with Washington in 2000 and started 54 games there across four seasons; Madden NFL 2001 rated his 2000 season a 93. In 2003 he passed Reggie White's total of 198 to become the NFL's career sack leader. He retired after that season with 200 sacks and 1,224 combined tackles in 279 games, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
