The punter who scored the NFL's first two-point conversion
When the NFL brought back the two-point conversion in 1994, Tom Tupa scored the first one in league history, a fake-kick keeper for the Cleveland Browns against Cincinnati on opening day. He did it three times that season and earned the nickname Two-Point Tupa, not bad for a man whose day job was punting.
Ohio State sent him into the league as a quarterback, third round, 68th overall to the Phoenix Cardinals in 1988, and he threw passes early before committing to punting for good. Across seven teams he averaged 43.4 yards on 873 punts and made first-team All-Pro with the Jets in 1999.
The ratings knew his value: a 39 in the 1996 edition, then a leap to 91 in the 2000 game near his All-Pro form, an 89 the following year, and softer numbers as he aged into his late thirties.
