Jerome Bettis: 13,662 Rushing Yards, Hall of Fame in 2015

Jerome Bettis was born on February 16, 1972, in Detroit, Michigan, and attended Mackenzie High School before rushing for 1,912 yards at Notre Dame. The Los Angeles Rams selected him 10th overall in the 1993 NFL draft. He rushed for 1,429 yards as a rookie, was named Offensive Rookie of the Year, and was the only rookie on the Associated Press first-team All-Pro squad.

Bettis made the Pro Bowl again in 1994, a season Madden NFL 95 graded at a calculated 98. The Rams traded him to Pittsburgh on the day of the 1996 draft, and he answered with 1,431 yards, 11 touchdowns, a second AP first-team All-Pro selection and Comeback Player of the Year honors. He set a career high with 1,665 yards in 1997, which Madden NFL 98 rated a calculated 95, and topped 1,000 yards in each of his first six Steelers seasons.

A hip and groin injury ended his 2001 season early, and he shared carries thereafter; Madden NFL 03 rated him 88 for 2002. He earned a sixth Pro Bowl selection in 2004 and spent 2005 as a short-yardage back, running for 101 yards and two touchdowns against Chicago on December 11 in a season Madden NFL 06 rated 87. He announced his retirement on the field after Pittsburgh won Super Bowl XL on February 5, 2006, finishing with 13,662 rushing yards and 91 rushing touchdowns. How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
