157 yards through a migraine in Super Bowl XXXII

Blinded by a migraine at halftime of Super Bowl XXXII, Terrell Davis went back out and ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns as Denver beat Green Bay 31 to 24 and finally broke the AFC's Super Bowl drought. He was the MVP of that game and, a year later, the NFL's MVP after a 2,008-yard 1998 season that made him the fourth man ever to clear 2,000.

Denver found him in the sixth round, 196th overall, out of Georgia in 1995, and he became the best back of his era before the wear caught up. He made three straight Pro Bowls and three first-team All-Pros from 1996 to 1998, won a second ring in Super Bowl XXXIII, and piled up 1,140 rushing yards in the playoffs alone. A torn knee in 1999 gutted the back half of a career that ended at 7,607 yards and 60 scores. Canton called in 2017.

Madden caught only the edges of the greatness: a 54 in the 1996 edition before the breakout, then a 91 in the 2000 game once he was a household name, settling into the mid-80s as the knee problems mounted.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
