Mark Schlereth: three Super Bowl rings, two Pro Bowls, 29 surgeries

Mark Fremont Schlereth was born January 25, 1966 in Anchorage, Alaska, graduated from Robert Service High School in 1984, and signed with Idaho. The Washington Redskins drafted him in the tenth round of the 1989 NFL draft with the 263rd pick. He started at right guard, was selected to the Pro Bowl for the 1991 season, and started in Washington's 37-24 win over Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVI on January 26, 1992. Madden NFL 93 put him at a calculated 95 for the 1992 season.

Schlereth signed with the Denver Broncos in 1995 and moved to left guard, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 68 for the 1996 season. He turned 32 on the day Denver beat Green Bay 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII, January 25, 1998. He was named to a second Pro Bowl and won the George Halas Award for the 1998 season, which Madden NFL 99 rated a calculated 97; Madden NFL 2000 had him at a calculated 94 for 1999.

He underwent 29 operations during his career, 20 of them on his knees and 15 on the left knee alone, and announced his retirement on April 18, 2001 after 156 games and 140 starts. He went into broadcasting, working on ESPN's NFL Live from 2004 to 2017 and later for Fox Sports. He was a charter inductee into the University of Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
