Jerry Rice was born on October 13, 1962 in Starkville, Mississippi, played at Mississippi Valley State and was drafted 16th overall by San Francisco in 1985. He was named Offensive Player of the Year in 1987 after catching 22 touchdown passes in a twelve-game season, and he was MVP of Super Bowl XXIII in January 1989 with 215 receiving yards against Cincinnati. Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 99 for the 1991 season.

San Francisco won Super Bowl XXIX after the 1994 season, and Madden NFL 95 again listed him at a calculated 99. On August 31, 1997 he tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee against Tampa Bay, ending a streak of 189 consecutive games. He returned for a full 1998 season and was selected to the Pro Bowl again, and Madden NFL 2000 graded the 1999 season at a calculated 95.

He signed with Oakland in 2001 and played in Super Bowl XXXVII after the 2002 season. In 2003, at 41, he led the Raiders with 63 catches for 869 yards, and Madden NFL 04 rated him 90 for that season. Oakland traded him to Seattle in October 2004. He announced his retirement on September 5, 2005 with 1,549 receptions, 22,895 receiving yards and 197 receiving touchdowns, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
