Pitt QB, 1984 MVP, 61,361 yards, Hall of Fame class of 2005

Dan Marino was born on September 15, 1961 in Pittsburgh, played at the University of Pittsburgh, and was taken 27th overall by the Miami Dolphins in 1983, the sixth and last quarterback selected in that first round. In 1984 he threw for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns, won the AP Most Valuable Player award and first-team All-Pro honors, and lost Super Bowl XIX to San Francisco 38-16 on January 20, 1985.

He was first-team All-Pro again in 1985 and 1986 and second-team in 1983, 1994 and 1995, and he was selected to nine Pro Bowls. A torn Achilles tendon limited him to five games in 1993. Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 95 for the 1994 season, the year he beat the New York Jets 28-24 on November 27 by faking a spike and throwing an eight-yard touchdown pass to Mark Ingram.

He passed Fran Tarkenton for career passing yards on November 12, 1995 and for career touchdown passes two weeks later. Madden NFL 98 rated him a calculated 99 for the 1997 season and Madden NFL 99 a calculated 98 for the 1998 season. His final game was a 62-7 divisional playoff loss at Jacksonville on January 15, 2000. He retired in March 2000 with 61,361 passing yards, 420 touchdowns and 252 interceptions, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
