He invented the Lambeau Leap and reinvented the safety
LeRoy Butler turned a broken play into a tradition. On December 26, 1993, Reggie White scooped a fumble and lateraled to Butler, who scored and then jumped into the arms of the fans behind the end zone, and the Lambeau Leap was born. He was a Florida State product, a 1990 second-round pick at 48th overall, and he spent all 12 of his seasons in Green Bay.
Butler reshaped what a safety could be. Lined up near the box, he became the first defensive back in NFL history to record 20 interceptions and 20 sacks, finishing with 38 picks and 20.5 sacks. He made four Pro Bowls, earned four first-team All-Pro selections, joined the 1990s All-Decade Team, and capped a 35-21 win over New England in Super Bowl XXXI with seven tackles and a sack. Canton called in 2022.
His Madden presence spanned generations of the game. A modest 61 in the 1996 edition belied his standing, but the ratings caught up, listing him at a career-best 91 in the 2000 edition before easing to 88 and 81 in his final two years as his body wore down.
