Randall McDaniel was born on December 19, 1964, in Phoenix, Arizona, and played college football at Arizona State. The Minnesota Vikings drafted him in the first round, 19th overall, in 1988. He started 15 games as a rookie and made the first of 12 consecutive Pro Bowls following the 1989 season.

McDaniel was a first-team Associated Press All-Pro in 1990, again from 1992 through 1996, and once more in 1998, with second-team selections in 1991 and 1997. Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 98 for the 1994 season, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 93 for 1996. He started 202 consecutive games at left guard. Minnesota scored 556 points in 1998, then an NFL record, and Madden NFL 99 gave him a calculated 94 for that year.

He signed with Tampa Bay in 2000 and played two seasons there. In 2000 he caught the only pass of his career, a two-yard touchdown, and Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 91. McDaniel played 222 games and started 220 across 14 seasons. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 2008, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 2009.
