Seattle spent the third overall pick in 1997 on Springs, the highest a cornerback had ever been drafted, a record that stood until Jeff Okudah matched it in 2020. The son of former Cowboys running back Ron Springs, he backed up the billing quickly, picking off seven passes and returning two for scores in 1998 to earn his lone Pro Bowl. Madden treated him as a locked-in star from the start, a 93 in both the 2000 and 2002 editions.
His most unusual season came in 2004 after he signed with Washington, when he led the team in both interceptions and sacks, a first for a cornerback, and made second-team All-Pro. He finished with 33 career interceptions across thirteen seasons in Seattle, Washington, and New England. Even as the ratings drifted, from the low 90s down to an 81 in his 2009 edition, he kept starting into his mid-thirties on Bill Belichick's Patriots.
