Steve Young Madden Career 1992-2000 - Peak 99 OVR
Two-time MVP who led the NFL in passer rating six times
Steve Young was born October 11, 1961 in Salt Lake City and was a unanimous All-American at BYU in 1983, winning the Davey O'Brien Award and finishing second to Mike Rozier in the Heisman voting. Tampa Bay made him the first pick of the 1984 supplemental draft, though he first played two seasons for the USFL's Los Angeles Express. He played for the Buccaneers in 1985 and 1986, then was traded to San Francisco in 1987, where he backed up Joe Montana.
Young became the 49ers' full-time starter in 1991, and Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 56 for that season. He won the 1992 MVP award with 25 touchdown passes and a 107.0 rating, which Madden NFL 93 graded at a calculated 76. San Francisco traded Montana to Kansas City in the spring of 1993, and Young then set a franchise record with 4,023 passing yards and led the NFL with 29 touchdown passes.
His second MVP came in 1994, with an NFL-record 112.8 passer rating and 35 touchdown passes, and he threw six more in the 49-26 Super Bowl XXIX win over San Diego. Madden NFL 95 graded that season at a calculated 95. He threw 36 touchdown passes in 1998, a season Madden NFL 99 put at a calculated 99. A concussion in the third week of 1999 ended his playing career. Young was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
