1997 NFL Season / Madden NFL 98

Madden NFL 1998 shipped in summer 1997 for the 1997 NFL season. Launch ratings are set before the season is played, so they reflect the previous year’s performance - a player’s breakout shows up in the next year’s game.

Madden NFL 98 released in 1997 with John Madden on the cover, the last entry built for the Genesis and SNES generation as the series committed to the PlayStation and its 3D engine.

Denver won Super Bowl XXXII, 31-24 over Green Bay, Terrell Davis named game MVP despite a migraine that cost him the second quarter, finishing with three rushing touchdowns. Brett Favre and Barry Sanders shared regular-season MVP, Sanders running for 2,053 yards, and Dana Stubblefield won Defensive Player of the Year with 15 sacks.

Sanders became the third man to break 2,000 rushing yards and was the marquee skill-position rating in the game, his cuts impossible to capture on the controller. Davis' title run ended the AFC's long Super Bowl losing streak and made the Broncos the league's new measuring stick.
