Shawn Jefferson: ninth-round pick, 470 catches, two Super Bowls

Shawn Jefferson was born on February 22, 1969, in Jacksonville, Florida, and played college football at Central Florida. The Houston Oilers drafted him in the ninth round of the 1991 draft with the 240th pick, and he spent his rookie season with the San Diego Chargers, catching 12 passes for 125 yards in 16 games.

Jefferson became a full-time starter in 1994, when he caught 43 passes for 627 yards and San Diego reached Super Bowl XXIX; his calculated rating for that season in Madden NFL 95 was 96. He signed with the New England Patriots in 1996 and played in Super Bowl XXXI after that season. He led the NFL with 22.7 yards per reception in 1998, a year for which Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated rating of 84, and he scored six touchdowns in 1999 with a calculated 89 in Madden NFL 2000.

He moved to the Atlanta Falcons in 2000 and set a career high with 60 receptions for 822 yards, a season rated 81 in Madden NFL 2001. After three years in Atlanta he played seven games for the Detroit Lions in 2003 and did not appear again. Jefferson finished with 470 receptions for 7,023 yards and 29 touchdowns in 195 regular-season games, and he returned to Detroit as an offensive assistant in 2006 to begin a coaching career. He was named to the New England Patriots All-1990s Team.
