Jimmy Lee Smith Jr. was born on February 9, 1969 in Detroit and played high school football in Jackson, Mississippi. He caught 110 passes at Jackson State, and Dallas drafted him in the second round, 36th overall, in 1992. He played seven games as a rookie special-teamer for the Super Bowl XXVII champions.

An emergency appendectomy in August 1993 brought a post-surgical infection and an ileostomy that cost him the entire season, and Dallas waived him on July 11, 1994. Jacksonville signed him after a tryout in February 1995. He became a starter in 1996 and led the AFC with 1,244 receiving yards, a season Madden NFL 97 rated him 39. He was a second-team All-Pro in 1998, for which Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 93, and he set franchise records with 116 catches and 1,636 yards in 1999.

At Baltimore on September 10, 2000 he caught 15 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 94 for that season. He reached five straight Pro Bowls from 1997 through 2001, the last of them a year Madden NFL 02 rated him 88. A four-game substance-abuse suspension opened his 2003 season. He retired on May 11, 2006 with 862 receptions and 12,287 receiving yards, and Jacksonville added him to the Pride of the Jaguars in 2016.
