Eric Metcalf was born on January 23, 1968 in Seattle, the son of three-time Pro Bowl running back Terry Metcalf. At Texas he won NCAA long jump titles in 1986 and 1988 and set school records for career receptions and all-purpose yards. Cleveland traded four picks to move up and take him 13th overall in the 1989 draft.
He led the NFL in kickoff return yards in 1990 and in punt returns in 1992 after Bill Belichick moved him to that job. On October 24, 1993 he returned punts of 91 and 75 yards for touchdowns in a 28-23 win over Pittsburgh, the second with 2:05 to play. He led the league in all-purpose yards that season, was first-team All-Pro and made the first of three Pro Bowls; Madden NFL 94 listed a calculated 46 for the year.
Traded to Atlanta in 1995, Metcalf moved to slot receiver and led the Falcons with 104 receptions for more than 1,000 yards, a season Madden NFL 96 rated a calculated 92. He made a third Pro Bowl with San Diego in 1997 after leading the league with three punt return touchdowns; Madden NFL 98 rated it a calculated 82. He played his last games with Green Bay in the 2002 season, retiring with 17,230 all-purpose yards and 55 touchdowns.
