Troy Fitzgerald Brown was born on July 2, 1971 in Barnwell, South Carolina, played college football at Marshall, and was drafted by the New England Patriots in the eighth round, 198th overall, in 1993. He made no starts in his first four seasons and worked mainly on returns. Madden NFL 97 rated his 1996 season a 15.

Brown became a full-time starter in 2000, and Madden NFL 2001 rated that season an 80. In 2001 he caught 101 passes for 1,199 yards, was selected to the only Pro Bowl of his career, and returned a punt for a touchdown in the AFC Championship Game at Pittsburgh. Madden NFL 03 rated his 2002 season an 89.

Injuries in the New England secondary moved Brown to cornerback in 2004, and he intercepted three passes, the only three of his career, while catching 17 for 184 yards; Madden NFL 05 rated that season an 86. He won Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX with the Patriots. He retired after the 2007 season with 557 receptions for 6,366 yards and 31 touchdowns, and was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2012.
