Alvin Harper was born on July 6, 1968, in Lake Wales, Florida, and played college football at Tennessee. The Dallas Cowboys took him 12th overall in the 1991 draft, and he started five of his 15 games as a rookie opposite Michael Irvin. Madden NFL 92 listed him at a calculated 20 for that season.

Harper caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Troy Aikman in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XXVII on January 31, 1993, and gained 75 yards on three receptions in Super Bowl XXVIII a year later. He led the NFL at 24.9 yards per catch in 1994, with 33 receptions for 821 yards and eight touchdowns, and Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 95 for that season.

He signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent in 1995, a year for which Madden NFL 96 gave him a calculated 82, and Madden NFL 97 rated him 53 for 1996, his second and last season there. Harper played for Washington in 1997 and returned to Dallas for two games in 1999, finishing with 191 receptions for 3,473 yards and 21 touchdowns. He signed with the Memphis Maniax of the XFL in 2001.
