Stepfret Williams Madden Career 1997-1998 - Peak 76 OVR

Stepfret Williams set fifteen school records at Northeast Louisiana, the program later renamed Louisiana-Monroe, more than 3,000 receiving yards and 33 touchdowns for a small-school receiver with real speed. Dallas took him in the third round in 1996, a developmental deep threat on a roster still stacked from the dynasty years, and the fit was always going to be about patience rather than immediate targets.

His Madden cards capture the raw-tools profile exactly. The Madden NFL 97 entry lists a 16 on the old low-number scale, but the attributes underneath tell the real story, an 82 speed and an 85 agility next to a 25 catch rating, the classic burner who cannot yet be trusted with the ball. A year later, in Madden NFL 98, the number jumps to a 76 as he earned a third-down role and caught thirty passes, the card finally reflecting a receiver who had started to put it together.

It did not last long in Dallas. Williams moved on to Cincinnati, then a stint in San Diego and a productive XFL season in Birmingham, finishing his NFL run with thirty-seven catches for 421 yards. He was a classic small-school speed prospect, all straight-line burst and unfinished hands, and the gap between the 82 speed and the 25 catch on that rookie card is the whole scouting report in two numbers.
