Derrick Alexander was born on November 6, 1971, in Detroit, Michigan, and played college football at Michigan from 1989 to 1993, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors in 1992 and 1993. The Cleveland Browns drafted him in the first round of the 1994 draft with the 29th pick. He caught 48 passes for 828 yards as a rookie and made the PFWA All-Rookie Team; his calculated rating for 1994 in Madden NFL 95 was 95.

Alexander caught only 15 passes in 1995, then the franchise relocated and became the Baltimore Ravens. He gained 1,099 yards on 62 receptions in 1996 and 1,009 yards on 65 receptions in 1997, a year that included a 92-yard touchdown catch against Seattle on December 7, the longest reception in the NFL that season; Madden NFL 98 carried a calculated 82 for 1997.

He signed a five-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in March 1998 and had a calculated rating of 93 in Madden NFL 2000 for the 1999 season. In 2000 he caught 78 passes for 1,391 yards, a Chiefs single-season record, and Madden NFL 2001 rated him 86. An Achilles injury limited him in 2001, and he tore a knee ligament with the Minnesota Vikings in November 2002 and was released the following August. Alexander signed a one-day contract with Kansas City on July 22, 2005, to retire, finishing with 417 receptions for 6,971 yards and 40 touchdowns in 126 games.
