The Miracle at Michigan catch, a fourth pick unfulfilled

Michael Westbrook is on the receiving end of one of college football's most famous plays. His name is attached to the Miracle at Michigan, the 1994 Hail Mary from Kordell Stewart that he hauled in as time expired to beat the Wolverines. That catch, and a consensus All-America season at Colorado, made him the fourth overall pick of the 1995 draft by Washington.

The pro career never quite matched the billing. His one big year came in 1999, when he went for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns, but he finished with 285 catches for 4,374 yards across seven seasons in Washington and a final year in Cincinnati. In 1997 he was fined $50,000 for punching teammate Stephen Davis on the sideline, an incident caught on camera. He later earned a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and fought in mixed martial arts.

Madden pegged his ceiling right at that 1999 peak. He shows up as a 40 in the 1996 edition as a raw rookie, jumps to a career-high 89 in the 2000 game after his best season, then slides to 80, 75, and 79 across the next three editions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
