Madden NFL 97 released in 1996 with John Madden on the cover and was the first in the series to offer a 3D player view on the PlayStation. The database's top-rated names that year read like a Hall of Fame ballot: Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Reggie White, and a young Drew Bledsoe in New England.

Green Bay won Super Bowl XXXI, 35-21 over New England, return man Desmond Howard named game MVP after a 99-yard kickoff return. Brett Favre won his second straight regular-season MVP, Barry Sanders led the league with 1,553 rushing yards, Mark Brunell paced the NFL with 4,367 passing yards, and Bruce Smith won Defensive Player of the Year.

Favre's 13-3 Packers ended the franchise's 29-year title drought and were the league's measuring stick all year. Rice and Smith anchored the top of the ratings as they had all decade, while Reggie White's Super Bowl sack flurry validated his place among the highest-rated defenders in the game.
