Tony Derrick Martin was born on September 5, 1965 in Miami, Florida, and played college football at Bishop College and then Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado. The New York Jets drafted him in the fifth round, 126th overall, in 1989, but waived him before the opening-day roster was set, and Miami signed him as a free agent. He caught 29 passes in 1990 and Madden NFL 92 carried a calculated 49 for the 1991 season.
San Diego acquired him in 1994, and on September 18, 1994 he caught a 99-yard touchdown pass from Stan Humphries against Seattle, tying the record for the longest play from scrimmage in NFL history. Madden NFL 95 carried a calculated 97 for that season, in which the Chargers reached Super Bowl XXIX. He led the NFL with 14 touchdown catches in 1996, made his only Pro Bowl and was a second-team All-Pro; Madden NFL 97 listed him at 88.
Martin gained 1,181 yards on 66 catches for Atlanta in 1998, a season for which Madden NFL 99 carried a calculated 92, then returned to Miami and caught 67 passes for 1,037 yards in 1999. He played a final season with Atlanta in 2001 and finished with 593 receptions for 9,065 yards and 56 touchdowns.
