A two-time Fastest Man the game rated a 98 on speed alone

Alexander Wright was one of the fastest men in football, and for a while that was the whole of his value. A second-round pick out of Auburn in 1990, he won the NFL's Fastest Man competition twice and set a Cowboys record with a 102-yard kickoff return, a pure straight-line burner Dallas hoped to turn into a deep threat.

It never quite happened. Wright caught passes in bunches only after he left, traded to the Raiders in 1992, and the receiver never matched the sprinter. Madden's cards reflect the confusion, ranging from the 20s to a glitchy 98 in Madden NFL 95 for the 1994 season, built on a 98 speed rating, one of those numbers where the game rated the wheels and ignored the hands.

Wright finished with 101 catches across seven seasons for the Cowboys, Raiders and Rams, and a Super Bowl ring credited to his brief time on the 1992 Dallas roster. He was a track star who played receiver, a speed merchant every team keeps trying to develop, and Madden's inflated 98 caught the one thing he was elite at and none of the things he was not.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
