Mike Sherrard was born on June 21, 1963 in Oakland, California, and walked on at UCLA, leaving as the school's career receptions leader. Dallas traded up to take him 18th overall in the 1986 draft, and he played all 16 games as a rookie with 41 receptions for 744 yards and five touchdowns.

He broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg in a scrimmage on August 5, 1987, then re-fractured the leg while jogging in March 1988, missing both seasons. San Francisco signed him in Plan B free agency in 1989 and kept him on the physically unable to perform list all regular season, though he played in the postseason and won Super Bowl XXIV. He broke the fibula again seven games into 1990. Madden NFL 92 gave him a calculated 53 for the 1991 season.

The Giants signed him in 1993, and a hip injury cost him most of that year. In 1994 he set career highs with 53 receptions for 825 yards and six touchdowns, and Madden NFL 95 gave him a calculated 94 for that season. Madden NFL 96 graded his 1995 a calculated 79. He spent 1996 as a reserve in Denver, and Madden NFL 97 listed him at 57. He retired on August 6, 1997 with 257 receptions for 3,931 yards and 22 touchdowns in 105 games.
