A slot man and returner the game once spiked to a 97

Kelvin Martin was a slot receiver and punt returner out of Boston College, a fourth-round pick in 1987 who led the nation in punt-return yardage in college and made his NFL living the same way. He spent his best years in Dallas, a reliable third-down target and return man on the roster that grew into a champion.

Madden's cards of him are noisy, with one glaring spike. Martin shows a 97 in Madden NFL 95 for the 1994 season, a Seahawks card so far above his other grades that it can only be a data error, since nothing about his production justified it. His real numbers sat much lower, in the 40s and 50s, the honest range for a slot receiver and returner.

Martin won a Super Bowl ring with the 1992 Cowboys, then bounced to Seattle and Philadelphia before a final year back in Dallas. He finished with 367 catches and nearly 2,600 punt-return yards, a useful, versatile role player across a decade. Madden's phantom 97 tells you nothing true about him; the return yardage and the ring tell you what a good complementary player he actually was.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
