Madden NFL 2010 shipped in summer 2009 for the 2009 NFL season. Launch ratings are set before the season is played, so they reflect the previous year’s performance - a player’s breakout shows up in the next year’s game.

Madden NFL 10 released August 14, 2009 with Larry Fitzgerald and Troy Polamalu sharing the cover after meeting in the Super Bowl. The 99 club: Albert Haynesworth, Ed Reed, Fitzgerald, Nnamdi Asomugha, Peyton Manning, and Polamalu.

New Orleans won Super Bowl XLIV, 31-17 over Indianapolis, Drew Brees named game MVP. Peyton Manning won his record fourth regular-season MVP. Chris Johnson took Offensive Player of the Year and ran for 2,006 yards, Charles Woodson won Defensive Player of the Year, and Percy Harvin and Brian Cushing won the rookie awards.

Cover man Troy Polamalu validated nothing of his 99 in 2009: a knee injury held him to five games and Pittsburgh missed the playoffs. Albert Haynesworth, the other 99, took a record free-agent deal to Washington and disappeared. Chris Johnson was the rare over-delivery, the sixth man to break 2,000 rushing yards.
